Yola Dabrowski's profile

A Brief History of the Oboe

A chiropractor with expertise in functional medicine and functional neurology, Yola Dabrowski previously treated patients in San Jose, California. Interested in music, Yola Dabrowski has experience playing several musical instruments including violin, piano, and oboe.

Well-suited for playing classical music, the oboe produces a soothing and relaxing sound and is believed to have originated in France in the middle of the 17th century. The first oboes only had two or three keys and therefore could not produce semitone sounds. The popularity of the instrument spread throughout Europe, with the most advanced oboes being created in Germany. By the close of the 18th century, oboes with more keys on them were being produced, thus permitting oboe players to consistently play a wider range of sounds on them.

The design of oboes dramatically changed at the end of the 19th century when a new type of oboe was developed in France. This type of oboe, referred to as the conservatoire style, featured a key system that facilitated the production of loud sounds and fast playing. This style of the oboe is the dominant style in use today and is also recommended for those starting out playing the oboe.
